Monte Cristo

I love ordering Monte Cristo sandwiches in restaurants, but can hardly eat half of the meal because of the amount of grease. I thought I'd give cooking them at a home a shot. Plus, Mr. Cupcake was home sick, so it was the perfect night for a smaller meal.

Ingredients (for 4 sandwiches):
8 slices of whole wheat bread$0.87
1 egg$0.17
1/3 cup milk$0.15
8 oz. sliced ham$2.14
4 oz. Swiss cheese$0.95
honey mustard$0.37
powdered sugarminimal

Spread honey mustard on one side of 4 pieces of bread. Layer with sliced ham, Swiss cheese, and remaining pieces of bread. Mix egg and milk in bowl. Dip sandwiches into egg mixture. Place in a pan sprayed with cooking oil and fry on medium until golden. Sprinkle sandwiches with powdered sugar

As a side we had a peeled and sliced cucumber dipped in honey mustard. Very good!

I made four sandwiches for the two of us, but will cut that back to 3 next time, two for Mr. Cupcake and 1 for myself. And just a note about the pricing. The egg is priced for cage-free eggs, and the milk is priced as organic 2%.

Sandwich cost: $4.65
Cucumber cost: $0.76
Total meal cost: $5.41
